An altercation in Brooklyn turned into a surreal scene of violence on Monday morning. According to PIX11, a father and his son were allegedly shot by Damon Lawrence, 35, at a NYCHA building. Sources reported that the incident rapidly escalated when, after being shot, the father, 65, and son, Quanell Ricks, 35, managed to disarm Lawrence and proceeded to beat him using a baseball bat.
The exact origins of the feud remain unclear, but the violent encounter took place at around 7:52 a.m. at 390 Bushwick Ave. As further detailed by AM New York, the father was hit in the leg and the son in the abdomen. Yet in a surprising turn of events, both shot individuals retained the presence of mind to effectively retaliate with a baseball bat and potentially their fists and kicks.
Following the exchange, the three men were taken to hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition. Lawrence, who lives in the same building as Ricks according to police sources, was arrested and has been charged with assault deemed as a hate crime and for criminal possession of a weapon. The nature of the hate crime aspect of the charges wasn't immediately clarified by the authorities. Ricks faces charges for assault and weapon possession as well, but there have been no charges reported against the father.
The story is expected to develop further as arraignments for Lawrence and Ricks were set for the next day. All three are expected to face legal repercussions for the incident, which unfolded in broad daylight on a Brooklyn thoroughfare.
