Cambridge residents curious about where their tax dollars are going have a chance to dive into the city's financials at an upcoming budget session. The city is inviting locals to attend one of two City Budget Walk Throughs aimed at demystifying the fiscal processes and encouraging public participation. The informative events are set to make the complex tiers of municipal finance and funding decisions more comprehensible for the average person.
According to a press release from the City of Cambridge, the first of these interactive sessions is scheduled for February 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at King Open School, located at 850 Cambridge Street. The second opportunity will be held on February 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Citywide Senior Center at 806 Massachusetts Avenue. Both events are designed to foster a greater understanding among residents about how their city is administrating its finances and what it means for their everyday lives.
Each Budget Walk Through will feature a short presentation to introduce attendees to the city's budgeting basics, followed by a gallery walk. During this time, participants can converse with City staff regarding a variety of topics, such as Housing & Zoning, Economic Opportunity & Equity, and Human Service Programs. The format aims to facilitate direct engagement between residents and city officials, creating a space for questions and explanations about the city's priorities and spending.
These sessions are open to everyone, whether they're seasoned budget enthusiasts or newcomers to the civic process. On offer shall be light food and refreshments, and for those who need it, free interpretation services can be requested through an email to [email protected]. Interested parties are encouraged to register for the Walk Throughs, though no prior experience with City or budget matters is necessary, just "curiosity and a desire to learn more about how your City works," as per the City of Cambridge's announcement.
