Yesterday, January 27, Stark County Common Pleas Judge Kristin G. Farmer handed down severe sentences to three Canton men for their involvement in the fatal shooting of a local man in 2023, as reported by The Repository. Tracian L. Jones, Jerry Dotson III, and Paul G. Johnson were sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole only after serving a minimum of 38 years for the murder of 35-year-old Bryson O. Barksdale Sr., who was struck in the neck by a bullet while inside his home on the early hours of April 7, 2023.
The young men, aged 20, 20, and 18 respectively at the time of their sentencing, were involved in a series of illegal activities leading up to the tragic event, their crimes ranging from stolen cars to illegal gunfire standing as testament to a spree of violence that harried the Canton streets from April 4-7, according to the evidence presented in court, which included video photos text messages, cell phone records, and shell casings with a chase by Bedford police preceding the murder as purported by The Repository.
The defendants, who were found guilty of murder with additional charges including felonious assault, were all juveniles during the commission of the crime, which prosecutors say was gang-related and a case of mistaken identity - the intended target being a member of a rival gang, not present at the scene. These details were shared by Cleveland19 and corroborated by information from the police and the Stark County Prosecutors’ office.
Throughout the trial, a jury deliberated on various charges but found the men not guilty of aggravated murder, nevertheless the substantial body of evidence including social media posts and information regarding the stolen vehicles led to their conviction on the charges for which they were sentenced, WHBC reported some of the evidence which prosecutors used to place the men in the vicinity where the house of Barksdale appeared to be a target of a drive-by shooting gone awry, as indicated by WHBC.
It is the consequence of these actions that leaves three men facing the daunting span of a life confined behind bars, while a community reckons with the loss of yet another life to senseless violence and the chilling thought that for those ensnared in the cycle of gang retribution, justice offers a cold comfort against the backdrop of endless grief.
