Charlotte was shaken by a tragic incident earlier in the month, as reported on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's website, when a fatal vehicle crash claimed the life of a teenage driver. The collision occurred in the 5800 block of West Sugar Creek Road last Saturday, just before nine in the morning. CMPD officers were dispatched to the site, where they discovered a severely damaged Toyota Yaris and BMW X3.
The driver of the Toyota, 16-year-old Comfort Antwi, sustained grave injuries in the crash. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC were swift in their response, transporting both Antwi and the driver of the BMW to the hospital for treatment. Nevertheless, Antwi's condition proved dire, and on Monday, she was pronounced deceased at a local hospital, leaving behind a solemn reminder of the fragility of life on the road.
An investigation by the CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit and DWI Task Force is currently ongoing, as they strive to piece together the circumstances that lead to the collision. According to their preliminary findings, Antwi appeared to be heading north on West Sugar Creek Rd. when her vehicle unexpectedly veered left into the oncoming traffic lane, resulting in the collision with the BMW. Further details await as the toxicology results are still pending for Antwi, potentially shedding light on whether impairment played a role in the unfortunate event.
Authorities have already informed Antwi's family of the heartbreaking loss. The CMPD's Public Affairs Division assures that they will provide updated information concerning the crash investigation as it progresses. Investigators are urging witnesses or anyone with pertinent information regarding the crash to come forward and contact Detective Kupfer at 704-432-2169 ext. 1.
