Chicago businesses across Little Italy, Lower West Side, Near West Side, and West Loop are on high alert following a string of thefts. These incidents, which have been occurring within the 1st and 12th Police Districts, involve the theft of cash registers and customer orders from several commercial establishments.
According to recent Chicago Police Department reports, the unknown offenders enter the businesses and wait for an opportunity when the register is left unattended. It's then that they seize the register and escape, later discarding these registers within a short distance of the scene. The thefts have taken place at various locations, including the 1200 block of S. Ashland and the 300 block of N. Des Plaines among others, with dates and times spanning from January 21 to January 24, 2026.
The suspected offenders have been described as 1-2 individuals between 15 - 17 years old, and their attire includes a variety of garments like dark gray hooded sweatshirts, sweatshirts with graphics & white lettering, black pants, polka dot pants, and white and gray gym shoes. Local businesses are being urged to stay vigilant and keep an eye out for any suspicious activity or individuals that match these descriptions.
Authorities are advising business owners to beef up security measures by ensuring their establishments are equipped with working surveillance systems and alarms. The alert stressed the importance of being aware of these crimes, alerting nearby businesses, and paying close attention to any seeming loitering individuals or vehicles. "Call 911 immediately if you are a victim or witness to a crime and provide a detailed description of the offender(s), including a vehicle description or license plate information," the alert from Chicago Police Department stated. Additionally, businesses are encouraged never to resist during a robbery and to avoid pursuing fleeing assailants.
Community members and business operators are also encouraged to request witnesses to remain on the scene, if possible, or to at least obtain contact information that could assist in any subsequent investigations. The hope is that through community vigilance and heightened security precautions, these thefts can be curtailed and the offenders brought to justice. Any information about these incidents should be promptly reported to law enforcement.
