Chicago neighborhoods are on edge following a spree of commercial burglaries reported across multiple districts, with businesses being targeted by a group of skillful thieves armed with sledgehammers and pry bars. According to a recent alert from the Chicago Police Department, several commercial establishments in Lake View East, Lincoln Park, Brighton Park, Armour Square, and Rogers Park have experienced break-ins and theft in a similar pattern, prompting a citywide notice to business owners and residents alike.
The incidents, which occurred in the early hours of January 12 and January 13, involved offenders shattering glass doors or windows to gain entry to the premises. Reports indicate that the burglars made off with cash, cash registers, ATMs, and a variety of merchandise before escaping in waiting vehicles. Among the affected businesses were locations on the 3500 block of N. Broadway, the 2300 block of N. Clark, which were hit within minutes of each other, as well as shops on the 2600 block of W. 39th Pl, the 4500 block of S. Archer, and the 4400 block of S. Western, as detailed by the CPD.
The alert describes the suspects, numbering between four and five individuals, all notably dressed in black ski masks, black hooded sweatshirts, and black pants. They are said to have used a 2018 black/purple Kia Optima, a gray Kia Sorento, and a black Kia SUV to facilitate their getaway. The police are now appealing to the public for any information related to these crimes and have provided a series of proactive measures for property owners to reinforce their security.
Businesses are advised to keep their properties well-lit, ensure all potential entry points are secure, and swiftly repair any damage to windows, doors, or locks. The police are urging anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to report it immediately and not confront or pursue any potential assailants. Merchants with video surveillance capabilities are reminded to save copies of any relevant footage, which might assist detectives in their investigations. In the event of a burglary, the CPD emphasizes the importance of preserving the scene for evidence collection and promptly calling 9-1-1.
