After years of investigation, Chicago police have arrested a suspect in connection with a 2020 murder. Victor Garcia, 45, was taken into custody on January 23, 2026, by the Area 1 Homicide Investigation Support Team. Garcia, who resides on the 5500 block of S. Fairfield Ave., Chicago, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder related to the shooting of a 40-year-old man on the same block, according to a Chicago Police Department report.
The arrest took place in the 500 block of Old Cargo Rd., Schiller Park, Illinois. Garcia has also been hit with two issuances of warrants, adding to the gravity of his charges. The victim, who was killed back on June 21, 2020, has not been named. A detention hearing for Garcia was held the following day, January 24, at 2600 S. California.
The Chicago Police Department has provided few details about the circumstances leading to Garcia’s identification as the prime suspect, or the evidence that eventually led to his arrest more than five years after the crime. What is known is that the community has been awaiting a resolution to this devastating event for quite some time, and the arrest marks a significant step in the direction of closure for those affected by the tragedy.
The case, like many others in the vast tapestry of urban crime, sheds light on the persistence of law enforcement in solving cold cases that, to the outside eye, might seem forgotten. With Garcia now in custody, residents hope for progress in what has been a long-awaited justice process. The information currently available does not indicate whether Garcia has entered a plea or if further details will be released. The Chicago Police stated, "No additional information is available at this time."
