A fire broke out in northwest Austin on a chilly Saturday night, igniting alarm and sparking a rush of emergency response amidst icy road conditions. The Austin Fire Department was called to the scene at 9807 N. FM 620 Road around 7:30 p.m., where a chimney malfunction had caused a blaze that eventually ravaged six apartment units, according to a report by CBS Austin. The incident left 12 people without homes, though the apartment complex managed to provide shelter for some, and others found alternative accommodations.
While no injuries were reported from the apartment fire, the peril was compounded as the Austin Fire crews simultaneously answered to 64 vehicle accidents across the city in a 24-hour span—a testament to the treacherous road conditions. Notably, "34 of those crashes occurring after weather conditions deteriorated around 5 p.m. Saturday," according to the same CBS Austin report.
Yet, the incident in northwest Austin wasn't an isolated episode of fiery mishap as winter's fury gripped the area. That same night, fire departments in both Austin and Round Rock were stretched thin as they tackled three structure fires amid the onslaught of a winter storm. KVUE detailed responses to other fires, one in Round Rock occurring at 10:36 p.m. on Wood Springs Lane and another close to 12:37 a.m. on Meadowcreek Drive—both believed to have roots in chimney malfunction and heating equipment.
With fire tenders echoing through the cold night and hazardous conditions persisting on the roads, firefighters sent out a plea to the public, urging residents to stay off the icy streets and exercise utmost caution when using heating appliances. The winter weather, while charming for some, bore harsher realities for those contending with its more destructive capacities, showcased by the brave efforts of firefighters across Austin and Round Rock.
