A 26-year-old man is in custody after Honolulu police discovered a 62-year-old man unresponsive in a Chinatown parking lot this week and later classified the case as a homicide investigation, authorities said.
Officers were called to an open lot fronting 1188 Maunakea Street, where they found the older man unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
As reported by KITV, the victim had previously told officers he was assaulted at a nearby location at about 4 a.m. the day before he was found. KITV also reported that a 26-year-old man was arrested in Chinatown on Thursday on suspicion of manslaughter. Detectives are still working the case, and charges are pending.
Chinatown Safety And Cameras
The arrest comes at a time when the city is in the middle of a major upgrade to Chinatown's surveillance network, replacing an aging camera system that covers Maunakea Street and nearby blocks.
Hawaii News Now reported last year that new high-resolution cameras were being installed to better capture violent incidents and help investigators build cases. Merchants, however, told the outlet that security cameras are only one piece of a larger public safety puzzle in the neighborhood.
Legal Implications
Honolulu police say the 26-year-old was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and that the investigation remains active. Formal charges have not yet been filed, KITV reported.
Detectives continue to interview witnesses and gather evidence as the case moves through the investigative process.
What To Expect Next
HPD has not released the names of either the victim or the suspect while the investigation is ongoing. Officials have not provided additional details at this time. This story will be updated as authorities release more information.
