A woman in her late 50s was killed yesterday after a vehicle struck her on the 500 block of Moss Street in Chula Vista, according to police. The collision happened shortly before 6 PM, and responding officers found the pedestrian lying in the roadway, severely injured and unresponsive.
Firefighters and paramedics tried life-saving measures at the scene, then rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Police say the driver involved stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
The Chula Vista Police Department’s Traffic Bureau responded and launched an investigation that remains active, according to FOX 5 San Diego. Officers blocked off the immediate area while detectives documented the roadway, collected evidence and worked to piece together what led up to the crash.
Authorities are not yet releasing the names of either the victim or the driver, citing the need to notify family members and complete additional investigative steps.
What investigators say
CVPD officers told FOX 5 San Diego they found the pedestrian "severely injured and unresponsive in the roadway," and first responders attempted lifesaving measures at the scene. Investigators also said that "drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors at this time."
Detectives are now looking to the public to help fill in the gaps, especially anyone who may have seen the crash or has video of the area around the time of the collision. Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call the Chula Vista Police Department Traffic Bureau at 619-476-5300.
Pedestrian safety in the region
Crashes like this remain part of a troubling pattern for pedestrians across the San Diego region. Local transportation advocates have been urging cities to move faster on street-calming projects and to focus on high-injury corridors where people walking are most at risk.
Groups working on Vision Zero strategies say a mix of better street design, targeted enforcement and public education can help prevent deadly collisions. Circulate San Diego and regional partners have outlined steps local leaders are pursuing to address dangerous streets, including quick-build safety fixes and data-driven enforcement focused on the most hazardous locations.
Meanwhile, detectives with the CVPD Traffic Bureau are still reconstructing how Thursday’s crash unfolded. They are urging residents and drivers in the area to review any dash-cam or doorbell camera footage that might have captured the incident or the moments leading up to it. Tips can be shared by calling 619-476-5300, and investigators say community help could play a key role in understanding exactly what happened on Moss Street.
