In a rousing display of determination, Clayton Keller of the Utah Mammoth took the reins in the final moments against the Philadelphia Flyers, leading his team to a nail-biting 5-4 overtime victory. The Utah Mammoth capitalized on a charged Delta Center atmosphere to extend its winning streak to four games. Keller, Utah's captain, brought the game level with a slick unassisted backhand goal with just over half a minute left in regulation, and then secured the win with a snap shot in overtime, as reported by NHL.com.
While the Flyers started strong, leading by three goals early in the second period, the Mammoth's comeback was sparked by JJ Peterka, followed closely by a goal from Lawson Crouse, pushing the team's momentum. Midway through the second, the Flyers' lead was cut short, prompting a challenging contest that would see the Mammoth claw back into the game. "What was the attendance tonight? I think they were all entertained," Mammoth head coach Andre Tourigny told ABC4 in the wake of their rally.
The Flyers appeared to have an unyielding control after Christian Dvorak, who had a standout performance with two goals and an assist, led his team's early offensive surge. However, Utah's resolve did not waver, finding critical goals from Barrett Hayton and Peterka, both capitalizing on power-play opportunities to narrow Philadelphia's lead, according to ABC News.
Despite the Flyers' efforts to contain Utah's aggressive offense, it was Keller's clutch plays that solidified the Mammoth's win. Speaking to his mindset in the crucial moments, Keller said, "I think a lot of it is belief, and the mental talk that I’m saying to myself in my head. I’ve always trusted my training," as he recounted to ABC4. The victory keeps Utah firmly in playoff contention, maintaining a gap above their nearest challengers in the Western Conference.
