Cobb County will receive $8.5 million to improve roadway safety. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the funding comes through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s "Safe Streets and Roads for All" program and is intended to address high-incident areas identified in recent safety assessments.

Drew Raessler, director of Cobb County’s Department of Transportation, told WSBTV that the funding will target areas including Pat Mell Road, Olive Springs Road, and Windy Hill Road, which have been identified for frequent traffic incidents and pedestrian safety concerns. Planned improvements include new streetlights, sidewalks, crosswalks, and potentially upgraded medians and traffic-calming roundabouts.

The goal of the improvements is to reduce speeding and enhance safety for pedestrians. Cobb DOT is also considering how the changes could affect emergency responders’ access, aiming to implement safety features without hindering response times.

County officials plan to involve the community in the planning process to guide the placement and implementation of the roadway improvements. Engineering work could begin later this year, with the timeline for completion still under discussion. The planned upgrades aim to enhance safety for daily commutes, including travel to work and school.
