A Detroit man is now at the center of a Houston murder case after prosecutors charged him in the November shooting of a woman at a self-storage facility, according to court filings. More than two months after the Nov. 5 killing, a murder complaint names 57-year-old Kip Stitts in the death of Sherry Dawson, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside a unit in the 6400 block of Eastex Freeway. Records indicate Stitts has been charged but is not in custody.

Scene And Official Response

Houston police say officers and Houston Fire Department paramedics were dispatched around 10:10 a.m. on Nov. 5 to reports of a shooting along the Eastex Freeway service road. Responders found a woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a release from the Homicide Division, the department said detectives are investigating and urged anyone with information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers, per the Houston Police Department.

How Investigators Say They Tracked A Suspect

As reported by Click2Houston, prosecutors point to a mix of phone-location data and surveillance footage to link Stitts to the crime scene. Investigators say phone records show the suspect’s device traveling north out of Houston the night of the shooting and arriving back in Detroit the following day.

According to those filings, storage-facility video appears to show a truck trailing Dawson’s vehicle into the complex, followed by what looks like a physical struggle and her collapse. Authorities also believe the suspect vehicle was a Ford F-250 that had reportedly been purchased in Beaumont a few days before the killing.

Storage-Unit Violence And Neighborhood Alarm

When news of the killing first broke, local coverage zeroed in on the storage lot just off North U.S. 59 and on how quickly homicide detectives descended on the scene. the initial Nov. 5 response and the department’s early call for witnesses highlighted growing community unease about safety at busy storage and U-Haul locations.

Alleged Motive: A High-Dollar Drug Deal

Prosecutors’ court filings, described by Click2Houston, outline what they say was a six-figure drug transaction that turned deadly. Stitts allegedly paid $125,000 for cocaine, and Dawson’s common-law husband allegedly received $10,000 to help arrange a meeting.

The filings state that communication reportedly stopped after the payment, and investigators believe the shooting may have been retaliation connected to the missing product. Prosecutors have requested a $1 million bond and cited a series of prior convictions for drug offenses and violent assaults in their filing.

Legal Status And How To Help

Harris County court records show a murder charge has been filed in the case. At this stage, Stitts remains at large and could face extradition if he is located outside Texas and returned to Harris County.

Houston police continue to ask anyone with tips to contact the Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, according to the department’s release via the Houston Police Department.
