It's a green light for transportation improvements across Cook County, as the Cook County Board of Commissioners gives the thumbs up on funding for a slew of projects designed to spruce up travel for residents. Cook County’s Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) released plans to roll out a series of rail-to-road upgrades intended to patch up and polish the infrastructure, from fresh pavement to brighter streetlights.

In the village of Bellwood, a tidy sum of $410,000 is pegged for Congress Street and Van Buren Street's facelift. Here, the revamp includes dolling up the roadway pavement, curbs, and sidewalks, while tacking on off-street parking to the mix. These improvements are touted to not only refresh the look but also reinforce the safety and efficiency of these thoroughfares.

Moving a bit over to Hillside, this suburban spot gets a more design-focused treatment with $203,904 aimed at the Taft Avenue corridor. In the works are plans for spiffy on-street bike lanes, ADA-compliant crosswalks, and sidewalks. Hillside's not stopping there – the agenda includes a full road resurfacing and a lighting upgrade all along Taft Avenue from Butterfield Road to Electric Avenue, enhancing mobility, safety, and connectivity in a single shot.

The nearby town of Maywood isn't left behind in the infrastructure stakes, either. A sizable investment of $410,000 is set aside for Randolph Street to install ADA curb ramp upgrades. This project is a firm stride towards bolstering pedestrian mobility and intersection safety for all users browsing the sidewalks of Maywood.

These projects represent a directional shift towards a more connected and navigable Cook County, with details available on any interested parties through DoTH’s interactive construction project map. The County notes that award letters for all grant programs will be dispatched this summer, followed closely by the publication of a grantee list on each department's website for public viewing.
