Prosecutors say a 22-year-old man is behind bars after Chicago police followed a missing 12-year-old girl’s phone to a West Side address and found her with injuries on her neck. The girl, who met the man on Instagram, was located on December 23 in the 4800 block of West Crystal Street after her parents called 911 and used a tracking app to pinpoint her location. Prosecutors identified the suspect as Henry Lema, who allegedly told investigators he considered the child his “girlfriend.”
How prosecutors say police located the child
According to a detention petition described by CWBChicago, Lema, a 22-year-old man from Ecuador, first made contact with the girl on Instagram, then later picked her up without her parents’ knowledge. The girl’s parents told police they used her cellphone location to trace her to the 4800 block of West Crystal Street and discovered her on the second floor of Lema’s home. Investigators say a sexual-assault evidence collection kit was completed, and additional material was gathered from the residence. Prosecutors also allege that Lema initially gave officers a false birthdate, but police later verified his true age.
What investigators say about the online contact
As reported by Breitbart, the girl told investigators she first began messaging Lema on Instagram in early December, then shifted their conversations to WhatsApp. She said she told him she was 12 years old and that Lema lied about how old he was. Prosecutors say Lema later admitted he knew she was a minor and acknowledged having sexual contact with her on two separate occasions. A Cook County judge ordered him held after prosecutors argued that detention was necessary.
Charges and penalties under Illinois law
Prosecutors have charged Lema with criminal sexual assault of a victim under 13 and kidnapping, and a judge ordered him detained as the case moves forward. Under the Illinois Compiled Statutes, predatory criminal sexual assault of a child involving a victim under 13 is a Class X felony that carries lengthy prison terms, while kidnapping is classified as a Class 2 felony. The detention petition, as outlined by CWBChicago, lays out the narrative and evidence prosecutors say support these felony counts.
Platform safety and context
Law enforcement officials and researchers have warned for years that social media can be a hunting ground for adults who groom minors, and some investigations have focused squarely on Instagram. Work cited by The Wall Street Journal and academic researchers has documented networks on the platform that helped connect accounts sharing or promoting sexual content involving children, and flagged features and recommendation tools that may make those connections easier. Advocates routinely urge parents to keep tabs on messaging apps and privacy settings, and to contact police right away if they think a child is being lured offline.
What happens next
Lema remains in custody as the case proceeds in Cook County court. At the initial hearing, prosecutors said they had met the legal standard for detention. The case will now move through pretrial proceedings, and prosecutors may submit additional filings as investigators continue to analyze physical and digital evidence.
