Costco's grand opening today marked a significant development in West Roseville, drawing lines of eager shoppers to its second store at 5200 Baseline Road. According to CBS News Sacramento, some patrons had been waiting since Thursday, indicating the high anticipation among the community for the store's launch.
The new Costco is not merely a place for bulk shopping; it's the inaugural major tenant of the Baseline Marketplace, promising to stimulate the local economy with job opportunities and retail diversity. As reported by ABC10, the Marketplace is taking shape over an 80-acre site on the corner of Fiddyment Road and Baseline Road, where Costco is only the first to open its doors out of a planned 400,000 square feet of retail space, which will include Home Depot and Target.
Roseville officials, including the local chamber of commerce, were present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a nod to the importance of this venture. The Costco is a cornerstone for Baseline Marketplace, which is being developed by Covenant Real Estate Group. "With Costco already under construction, the additional anchors we are securing, and the strong tenant mix we have commitments from, Baseline Marketplace is poised to become a leading regional shopping destination for both Placer County and the greater Sacramento region," Gary Gallelli, Jr., president of Gallelli Real Estate, told ABC10.
In response to concerns about traffic, the city and developers have planned significant improvements to accommodate the retail hub's impact. Those include widening Baseline Road, expanding southbound Fiddyment Road, and installing new traffic signals. Greeting shoppers alongside these infrastructural upgrades, the Costco gas station and car wash, opened earlier on Monday evening, introduced itself as a precursor to the Marketplace's service offerings. "All traffic improvement measures are required to be completed prior to the occupancy of the first building in the Baseline Marketplace project," Greg Bitter, City of Roseville Planning Manager, explained to ABC10.
Furthermore, non-vehicular access hasn't been overlooked. The project supports alternative transportation methods, providing over 110 miles of on-street bike lanes and sidewalks planned within the project area. Additionally, a transit center to accommodate Roseville Transit's current and potential future expansion is on the horizon.
With its doors now open, Costco and the upcoming Baseline Marketplace stand to redefine the shopping landscape in West Roseville, providing residents with a robust selection of retail and dining options that promise increased convenience and vibrancy to the area.
