State construction records spell out the basics. The Forney project is listed as a 161,251-square-foot Costco warehouse at 150 FM 460 with an estimated construction price tag of about $18.6 million. According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, a registration filed in November 2024 calls for work to kick off in February 2025 and wrap up in late June. For now, those filings are the most detailed public roadmap for how the build is supposed to unfold.
Planned opening and schedule
Local reporting, however, suggests Costco wants shoppers rolling carts through the doors sooner than the state paperwork implies. In a Sunday story, inForney reported that the Forney club is slated to open in March, a few months ahead of the late June completion date listed in the state records. That report also notes the project appears to be running ahead of schedule, and several regional outlets have echoed that characterization in recent coverage.
Fuel station next door
The warehouse is not arriving alone. Plans call for a separate fuel and retail building at 140 FM 460, just off the main club site. State records peg that project at about 11,852 square feet with an estimated cost of roughly $3.49 million. Why Forney?
Developers and city officials have been eyeing Forney’s boom for a while, and Costco appears ready to cash in on that momentum. The fast-growing city sits along the busy Highway 80 corridor, a stretch retailers love for its steady stream of commuters and new rooftops. The Dallas Morning News reported that the Forney City Council signed off on a Chapter 380 agreement to negotiate with Costco, and quoted city spokesman Zach Smith saying the city is “excited to welcome Costco.” The paper also pointed to strong traffic counts along the corridor and Forney’s status as one of Texas’s faster-growing communities as key selling points.
A bigger Texas picture
Forney is just one piece of a larger Texas play for the warehouse giant. MySanAntonio and other outlets report that new Costco locations are also lined up for Liberty Hill in March and New Braunfels in April, adding to the more than 40 warehouses the chain already operates across the state. Local leaders in Forney are banking on their club to become a major anchor, fueling sales tax revenue and luring additional retail development to the surrounding area.
For now, the timeline story is split between the TDLR schedule and local coverage that points to an earlier opening. A formal announcement with a firm ribbon-cutting date is expected once construction advances to the exterior-finish stage and Costco is ready to lock in its calendar.
