A serious accident on northbound Interstate 95 near St. Augustine caused a vehicle fire, critical injuries, and major traffic delays yesterday. According to a Facebook post, the crash involved a two-vehicle collision with a semi-truck, which led to the fire.
St. Johns County Fire Rescue reported that both northbound and southbound lanes were initially closed as emergency crews responded. By 8:50 p.m., two northbound lanes had reopened, and southbound traffic was moving, though still heavy. Cleanup operations continued while one northbound lane had already been reopened earlier in the evening.
At 4:05 p.m., St. Johns County Fire Rescue reported that one patient with critical injuries had been airlifted from the scene. The fire was under control, but a diesel fuel leak required a hazmat team to manage the hazard. Motorists were advised to expect heavy traffic and to use alternate routes, as cleanup was expected to take several hours.
Authorities continue cleanup efforts on I-95, and travelers are advised to stay updated and exercise caution while crews work to restore safe passage along the highway.
