The Dallas Animal Services (DAS) has recently spotlighted their new team member and an array of opportunities for local volunteers. DAS's volunteer newsletter, dated January 20th, detailed the introduction of Payton, their new Enrichment Coordinator, along with thanking volunteers for their support during recent programs. Having a diverse experience in animal care, Payton is set to nurture the physical health and curiosity of shelter animals. "I am so excited to join this team and bring some fun enrichment for the animals here at DAS," Payton told the DAS Volunteer Newsletter via the City of Dallas website.
The 'Calming the Canines' event, a special New Year's Eve program, was highlighted as a major success, welcoming over 380 volunteers and the public to support shelter dogs during the festivities. The initiative also gained traction through essential social media shares and donations. Additionally, the newsletter revealed the recent opening of the DAS Groom Station. The DAS Volunteer Newsletter states, "Grooming a pet helps prevent discomfort, improves their appearance, and can positively support the adoption process," according to the City of Dallas website. Volunteers interested in assisting with this and other opportunities can find details on available shifts and sign-up procedures within their My Impact accounts.
Another imminent event is the 'Ticket to Ride' transport initiative, where DAS seeks volunteers for canine handling and crate assembly, a significant aid in creating more kennel space and efficient shelter functioning. Also, the shelter requires enrichment supplies for cats and dogs, and invites donations of various items listed in their call-out. "If you have any of the following items and wish to donate, please drop them off with the volunteer team," as per the City of Dallas, the newsletter requests, itemising wine corks, cardboard, and pet-friendly herbs, among other needs.
Spotlighting the individuals behind the scenes, the newsletter congratulated Darina Janovova as the featured volunteer, who reflected on her experiences with DAS. Describing her volunteer work as "a balm for the soul," Janovova underscores the joy and physical benefits she gains from her time at the shelter. "After volunteering at DAS for only two months, I ran my best half-marathon time, and it's thanks to the jogging with dogs," she shared in the newsletter via the City of Dallas Website.
To close out the month, DAS will host a virtual volunteer town hall on January 28th to discuss updates and new volunteer opportunities. Volunteers can join the meeting online, with the option to submit questions in advance through email.
