A fire incident at an Oncor electrical substation in Dallas demanded an urgent response from Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) units, which were dispatched shortly after midnight on Saturday. The substation, located at 2405 Sargent Road, became the scene of a significant fire, with the first arriving companies encountering "a large volume of fire and heavy smoke," according to FOX 4 News.
Working with Oncor representatives, the DFR was able to deenergize the facility, permitting the start of suppression operations. Initially, the plan entailed protecting adjacent structures and allowing the fire to self-extinguish. However, the strategic joint effort enabled active firefighting measures. "While the initial plan was to protect exposures and allow the fire to burn out, Command was able to work with Oncor representatives, and have the substation deenergized, so suppression operations could take place," DFR officials relayed, per FOX 4 News.
The complexities of an electrical fire required the specialized approach of DFR's Airport Rescue Firefighting units, which employed foam to tackle the blaze. A Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team also responded to the scene to assess and manage potential risks. Environmental concerns prompted notifications to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and local stormwater authorities for monitoring any possible environmental impacts.
Despite the intensity of the scene, Oncor assured that no customers lost power due to this incident. Throughout the early hours of Sunday morning, the fire was largely subdued, with DFR units remaining on-site to cool down the debris, an ongoing activity reported by The Dallas Morning News. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and according to Oncor, "the cause of the fire is under investigation," they explained.
