Dallas is gearing up for a week-long celebration in honor of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., starting January 13. The city has organized a series of events, including a job fair, a multicultural showcase, and a scholarship gala, aiming to both honor Dr. King's legacy and inspire the local community towards continued action for social justice.
With a strong focus on community empowerment and collaboration, the MLK Celebration Week brings together various organizations, including the Office of Housing & Community Empowerment, HELP, Workforce Solutions, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. According to a statement by the City of Dallas, these activities are designed "to inspire action, unity, and remembrance", culminating in the MLK Day Parade on January 19.
This year's theme is "Remaining Awake Through a Great Transformation," which calls on participants to be proactive in creating a better future. In a statement obtained by the City of Dallas, Kelly Drake, Vice Chair of the MLK Community Center Advisory Board, said, “Dr. King’s message urges us to remain engaged and participate fully in shaping a more just Dallas.”
Highlighted by the MLK Scholarship and Awards Gala set for January 17, the week aims to financially support local students and acknowledge community members emulating Dr. King's principles. Featuring journalist Roland Martin as the keynote speaker, this high-profile event is set to bring the community together in a celebration of excellence and inspiration for future leaders. “Let this week be both a reflection on how far we’ve come and a recommitment to the work still before us,” said Clara Brown-Trimble, Chair of the MLK Community Center Advisory Board, the City of Dallas.
