A dramatic rescue unfolded in Westmoreland County as police and rescue crews saved three officers and two juveniles from a precarious predicament at the bottom of a 600-foot hillside. The harrowing series of events started late Sunday afternoon when a police officer from Monessen sighted a vehicle reported stolen out of Charleroi. The encounter took a dangerous turn when three juveniles, all under the age of 18, fled the car, prompting a chase on foot by law enforcement.

According to WPXI, the chase led to a neighbor's yard where one of the suspects escaped, while the other two slid down the steep hillside near Dennis Avenue. Monessen Police Chief David Yuhasz recounted how the juveniles ended up "in a neighbor’s yard. A neighbor scared them off, and I believe that’s when they separated." Pursued by police on the treacherous terrain, two suspects and the pursuing officers found themselves unable to climb back up. After locating their footprints in the snow, the rescue operation commenced.

Several EMS, fire, and police departments convened at the scene to conduct a rescue that spanned four hours in freezing temperatures. Initially, teams attempted to reach them using UTVs, but the challenging conditions of the hillside necessitated a rope rescue as the only viable means to extricate them. "The fire departments were there with chainsaws cutting trees down," said Chief Yuhasz in a statement obtained by WTAE. The wooded and icy hillside posed significant hindrances, with one officer reportedly sliding down during the descent, unable to ascend due to the conditions.

The ordeal concluded successfully with all individuals rescued and evaluated by medics. Chief Yuhasz mentioned the stroke of luck that police decided to chase the juveniles, acknowledging, "If they would have went into the woods, and we did not know...they could still be in the woods at this point. Who’s to say?" as detailed by WPXI. As for the juveniles, they were taken up with ropes first, ensuring their well-being by maintaining constant law enforcement contact.

The third suspect remains at large, but authorities remain confident, having a lead on their identity. Although charges will be filed related to the stolen vehicle incident, Chief Yuhasz stressed the priority was the immediate welfare of those involved over prospective punitive measures.
