On New Year's Day in Davie, Florida, a 75-year-old woman, Laurie Kavin, was involved in an incident at a Walmart self-checkout line where she brandished a Taser and falsely identified herself as a police officer. According to the Davie Police Department report cited by Local 10, the confrontation began after an elderly woman on a motor scooter allegedly directed racially charged comments at a Hispanic shopper.
According to the police report, Kavin removed a Taser from her handbag and pointed it at the victim and her mother, creating sparks, while claiming to be a law enforcement officer. Surveillance footage and the investigation showed her claim was false. Kavin was detained by an officer as she tried to leave the parking lot with her dog. She admitted to brandishing the Taser and falsely identifying herself but said she had only pointed it at the ground. In a Facebook post, they lists her charges as aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony and impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Authorities report that the victim and her mother were supported by an independent witness, confirming the confrontation at the Walmart self-checkout line. The dispute arose following racially charged remarks, prompting Kavin’s involvement with a Taser and false claim of being a police officer.
Kavin has been released from Broward County Jail on her own recognizance after a judge found probable cause for the charges. Her arrest mugshot has circulated online, showing her physical description and the nature of the alleged actions. Court proceedings are expected to continue in the coming days.
