A Friday night drive on San Antonio's Northeast Side ended in tragedy when a head-on collision on Walzem Road left one person dead and two others seriously injured. The wreck happened just after 8 p.m. in the 6400 block of Walzem Road near the Windsor Oaks neighborhood. A white 2015 Hyundai Elantra and a red 2014 Toyota Camry were traveling in opposite directions when they collided; emergency crews pronounced the Hyundai driver dead at the scene and transported the other two to a local hospital with major injuries. Police shut the stretch of roadway while investigators worked the scene.
According to News 4 San Antonio, the Hyundai driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the Camry's driver and a passenger were taken to a local hospital with major injuries. The story by Natali Castillo says authorities have not released the victims' names and that the investigation remains active as officers process the crash site.
Where the crash happened
Walzem Road is a busy Northeast Side corridor and has been the site of multiple serious incidents in recent years. For example, a pedestrian fatality in the 6900 block of Walzem Road last February underscores the stretch's safety challenges, according to KSAT. Local traffic patterns and past crashes have made the corridor a frequent focus for emergency responders.
Investigation and how to help
Police told News 4 San Antonio that the investigation is ongoing and they have not yet released a probable cause. Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured video is asked to contact the San Antonio Police Department; the department's non-emergency number is 210-207-7273, per the City of San Antonio. Officials closed the roadway for several hours while crews cleared wreckage and collected evidence.
