A newly released Los Angeles Police Department video is shedding more light on an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead in the parking lot of a 7‑Eleven in Reseda. The footage captures an early‑morning confrontation from Dec. 8, 2025, and was posted by the department as part of its ongoing review process.
Video, scene, and immediate timeline
The department says officers first responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon near Sherman Way and Wilbur Avenue on Dec. 8. As officers were speaking with the victim, they heard gunfire, and an air unit then directed officers to a suspect in front of the convenience store, according to the LAPD. ABC7 reported Friday that the department released the footage to the media as part of the investigation.
What officials say about the footage
“We have to review body worn video to determine when and if that suspect fired at officers,” Sgt. Bruce Borihahn told NBC4. Local reporting says the video shows officers being guided in by an airship before they encounter the suspect; officials say an officer-involved shooting followed and the suspect was hit.
Victim identified, weapon recovered
The Los Angeles County medical examiner identified the man who was killed as 39-year-old Alex Canizales, according to MyNewsLA. The LAPD said a handgun was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence, and that one resident suffered a superficial injury that may have been caused by shrapnel. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, according to ABC7.
Ongoing probe and accountability
The department's Force Investigation Division is handling the probe, and the chief authorized the release of the names of the Topanga-area officers involved: Sergeant Dennis Cunningham and Police Officer Isaiah Galvez, the LAPD said. The department states that notifications to the suspect’s next of kin were completed and that the investigation remains active while the new footage and other evidence are reviewed.
