The department says officers first responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon near Sherman Way and Wilbur Avenue on Dec. 8. As officers were speaking with the victim, they heard gunfire, and an air unit then directed officers to a suspect in front of the convenience store, according to the LAPD. “We have to review body worn video to determine when and if that suspect fired at officers,” Sgt. Bruce Borihahn told NBC4. The Los Angeles County medical examiner identified the man who was killed as 39-year-old Alex Canizales, according to MyNewsLA. The LAPD said a handgun was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence, and that one resident suffered a superficial injury that may have been caused by shrapnel. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, according to ABC7.
Ongoing probe and accountability
The department's Force Investigation Division is handling the probe, and the chief authorized the release of the names of the Topanga-area officers involved: Sergeant Dennis Cunningham and Police Officer Isaiah Galvez, the LAPD said. The department states that notifications to the suspect’s next of kin were completed and that the investigation remains active while the new footage and other evidence are reviewed.
