The city of Denver is set to launch the 2026 season of the Ruby Hill Rail Yard this coming Sunday, February 1st. As a haven for winter sports enthusiasts, the urban terrain park is opening its gates to both snowboarders and skiers, providing freshly designed rails, boxes, and configurations that cater to all levels of expertise, from the fledgling beginner to the seasoned pro. Denver Parks and Recreation, along with a significant assist from Winter Park Resort, has rendered the Rail Yard a free-of-charge winter playground, accessible for as long as conditions will allow, which is projected to be through March.
With recent temperature drops, Denver has seized the chance to produce snow artificially, dictating the successful assembly of the Rail Yard. Volunteers, together with staff from Winter Park Resort and Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) employees, diligently invested themselves in the construction and setup, fundamental to the project's realization. According to the City and County of Denver, in the heart of the metropolis, this commitment by DPR emboldens the public with essential opportunities for outdoor winter activities.
Ensuring an inclusive introduction to winter sports, DPR is offering free snowboard rentals for newcomers on January 30th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Under the guidance of Winter Park and DPR Alternative Sports instructors, beginners have a prime opportunity to learn. Notably, the hill will be groomed flat, providing an open canvas with no advanced features, creating a clear distinction between the Rail Yard's challenging runs and the dedicated, featureless beginner zones. Sledding and tubing aficionados will find their joy in a specially designated area, separate from the Rail Yard, which will be off-limits for those activities.
Preparations are underway, necessitating a closure on Saturday, January 31st. Once the season is in full swing, rentals will continue to be available on the weekends. Park attendees are also in for a treat with free community events like the "Denver Learns to Ride Day" and the "Steel Lovers Rail Jam Hosted by Burton" on February 14th, a testament to the Rail Yard's dedication to community engagement and sporting passion.
Since its inception in 2007, Ruby Hill Rail Yard, as the first urban terrain park in North America, has been a trendsetter in the realm of city-embedded winter recreation. With a draw of over 12,000 visitors each season, the Rail Yard has both cemented its staple status in Denver's winter culture and challenged what it means to engage with winter sports in an urban setting. The support from the local community and partners, including DPR, endeavors to upgrade facilities with a new surface lift, all of which stand as a testament to this ongoing revolution in recreation.
