In a move aimed at bolstering the frontline defense against the ever-looming wildfire threat, the Department of the Interior has funneled $5.08 million into the hands of local governments to enhance their wildfire response capabilities. According to a press release by the DOI, the funding is a direct reflection of the Trump administration's commitment to improving wildfire preparedness and safeguarding communities at risk.

According to Department of the Interior announcement, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum underscored the significance of local response teams and the Trump administration’s drive to reinforce such agencies, stating, “President Trump knows local firefighting agencies are often the first to respond when a wildfire ignites and took strong action to ensure they had the funding needed to get the job done for the American people.” The focal point of this financial boost is the Slip-on Tanker Pilot Program, which empowers remote emergency response agencies to convert basic trucks into wildfire-fighting machines using slip-on tanker units. This financial gesture is no small feat, as local governments serving areas with populations of 50,000 or less now have an opportunity to receive grants ranging from $10,000 to $500,000.

This round of funding was disseminated amongst 97 local emergency response agencies spanning 26 states, all selected due to their moderate to high wildfire risk as analyzed by the Wildfire Risk to Communities tool. Given the destructive escalation of wildfires in recent years, the administration’s initiative to improve local agencies' swift reaction to these natural threats is not just a nod to preparedness, but a necessary step to protect lives and critical infrastructure.

The DOI asserts the alignment of this funding with the objectives laid out in Executive Order 14308, which calls for Empowering Commonsense Wildfire Prevention and Response. The notion is simple: better-equipped local outfits translate to improved response times and robust collaboration during wildland firefighting operations. There will be a new round of grant opportunities under the Slip-on Tanker Pilot Program coming up in early 2026, with more details set to be unveiled on grants.gov.
