A fatal collision in Columbia is currently under investigation after a vehicle evading a police traffic stop met with a tragic end. In the early hours of the morning, a Honda Accord fled an attempted stop by an unmarked Howard County Police Department (HCPD) police vehicle and subsequently crashed, leading to the death of the driver, who was alone in the car at the time of the accident.
The incident happened at around 1:52 a.m. on Route 32 near Broken Land Parkway, according to official reports from the Howard County Police Department. The vehicle, identified as a 2010 Honda Accord, turned over on the eastbound ramp to Broken Land immediately after fleeing the scene. This resulted in the closing of the ramp while emergency services responded and law enforcement began their investigation.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) has taken over the inquiry into the collision, following state law that mandates such oversight in cases involving police actions potentially leading to death. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene; their name was withheld pending notification of kin.
