Early this morning, the Cornelius and Huntersville Fire Departments responded to a call about an overturned vehicle on Interstate 77 near Milemarker 26. According to a social media post by Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue, the incident occurred at 1:00 AM. Arriving at the scene, the emergency teams found a vehicle flipped onto its roof and had to conduct a thorough search to ensure that all potential victims were accounted for.
Upon their arrival, Engine 3 and HL44 discovered that the vehicle was significantly off the road. An exhaustive examination ensued to locate the occupant(s), but it was determined that whoever had been involved managed to obviously leave prior to the teams' arrival. No further details were provided about the occupants or why they left the scene. The responders thus turned over the investigation to the Cornelius Police Department and the fire units subsequently returned to service.
Traffic along Interstate 77 experienced minor disruptions as a result of the incident, but it was cleared quickly once emergency services managed to effectively secure the area. As the investigation evolves, more information will certainly become available, and adjustments to driving patterns on this stretch of the highway may be recommended.
