The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is lacing up once again for its 6th Annual Deputy Peter J. Herrera Memorial 5K Run/Walk, a tribute to the late deputy who was fatally shot during a traffic stop in 2019. The community event, aimed at honoring Herrera's legacy, is set to bring together law enforcement officers and El Paso residents in a show of solidarity and remembrance. In preparation for the event, representatives from the Sheriff's Office took to the airwaves with 104.3 HITFM's DJ Johnny Kage to discuss the importance of the memorial and encourage community participation.
During the broadcast, the Community Services Section emphasized the dual nature of the 5K, not only to remember a fallen officer but also to strengthen the ties between the Sheriff's Office and the people it serves. The event has quickly become a staple in the community calendar, expected to draw crowds eager to support their local law enforcement and keep Herrera's memory alive. According to a social media post by El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, "Thank you to 104.3 HITFM and DJ Johnny Kage for having our Community Services Section on the show this morning to talk about our upcoming 6th Annual Deputy Peter J. Herrera Memorial 5K Run/Walk!"
Interest in the event has been bolstered through the Sheriff's Office's active engagement on social media, where they have provided updates and registration details. A post from El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte further invited the community to join the cause, stating, "If you haven’t registered yet, click the link in our bio to sign up—we hope to see you there!" The post signals the office's commitment to not just upholding law and order but also serving as a pillar of communal unity and support.
