El Paso's own Rebecca Guerrero, a high school English teacher at the Young Women's STEAM Research & Preparatory Academy, was recently honored with the James F. Veninga Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award. According to El Paso ISD, Guerrero was celebrated for her exceptional humanities instruction and approach that weaves critical thinking, creativity, and cultural understanding into the fabric of her curriculum.

In what turned out to be a competitive statewide program, involving more than 900 nominations, Guerrero's dedication set her apart. El Paso ISD quoted Guerrero expressing her gratitude: "It’s an incredible honor to bring this award to El Paso. I think the humanities are so vital in our world today. It’s where we grow our empathy muscles and I’m really grateful to be recognized for the work I do in this field."

Her accolade not only reflects personal success but also shines a light on a level of teaching that the El Paso Independent School District champions. District Superintendent Dr. Brian Lusk was among the officials celebrating Guerrero, praising the transformative influence she has on the students. "Rebecca Guerrero challenges young women to think deeply, ask important questions, and see themselves as leaders," Dr. Lusk told El Paso ISD. "That is exactly the kind of teaching we strive to cultivate throughout our district."

High-profile recognition came from Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, who lauded Guerrero’s achievement. "This award is very competitive. The fact that this extraordinary teacher at this extraordinary school, in our beautiful community, won this recognition, there’s no way I’d miss it," said Escobar, as per El Paso ISD, recognizing the significance of Guerrero's win for the El Paso community. She highlighted that the award represented more than individual achievement; it spoke to a collective ethos dedicated to shared humanity and its impartation.
