A routine traffic stop by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office on New Year's Eve turned into a significant narcotics bust, leading to the arrest of two individuals now facing multiple drug charges. According to a social media post from El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, deputies initially pulled over a gray Dodge Challenger for a vehicle registration violation at around 10:15 p.m.
The situation escalated when the driver, later identified as 34-year-old Gabriel Guzman, attempted to evade the deputies by fleeing on foot. After being apprehended, Guzman ingested a bag containing an unknown, white powdery substance. Further investigation of the vehicle uncovered multiple bags of suspected narcotics. With the passenger, 29-year-old Ashley Garcia, also being taken into custody, both parties now face serious drug charges amounting to several counts of Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance in various degrees.
In his statement, El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte expressed the gravity of the situation: "Attempting to flee and destroy evidence only adds to the seriousness of the situation," he said. "Our deputies acted quickly and professionally to take both individuals into custody and remove dangerous narcotics from our community." The swift action of the deputies likely prevented the potential distribution of these substances.
