Skalet Family Jewelers, a long-standing presence in Old Sacramento's business community, has concluded its more than century-long run after serving customers with their craftsmanship. John Skalet and his wife opened the store in Sacramento in 1975, establishing a legacy that became an integral part of the city's history before the business closed on yesterday.
The history of Skalet Jewelers dates back to Ben Skalet, a goldsmith and Russian immigrant who moved to New York City in the 1880s, according to KCRA. Over the years, his legacy was passed down through four generations, leading to a final "going out of business" sale with discounts up to 80%. Although the closure carries a sense of nostalgia, the owner stated that it was time to move on to the next chapter.
In a recent interview with ABC10, Howard Skalet discussed the closure of the shop where he began working full-time in 1982, stating “I’ve grown up in this store." The shop was involved in events such as engagements and births and served as a long-standing part of the community.
The closure of Skalet Family Jewelers marks the end of a family-run business in Sacramento. Howard Skalet thanked the staff, including his parents, John and Barbara, his brother Adam, and the community for their support over the years. He told ABC10, “Thank you so much. It’s been a pleasure,” and noted that the next tenant of the shop’s location would bring “really big news.”
