Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, a former nurse at Detroit's Sinai Grace Hospital, now faces charges in five additional sexual assault cases, bringing the total to eight alleged incidents. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy made the announcement, WXYZ reports.
Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, 47, is accused of sexual assaults at DMC Sinai Grace Hospital and a psychiatric emergency facility in Livonia. The new charges involve varying degrees of criminal sexual conduct and a statute concerning misrepresentation of medical treatment. The Livonia case was not immediately discovered due to delays in the facility’s case management system, The Detroit News reports.
Figueroa-Berrios faces two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, three counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, and four counts related to misrepresentation of medical treatment, FOX 2 Detroit reports. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy noted that these statutes have been rarely used since 2023 and urged any other potential victims to come forward.
According to Detroit News reports, Shelly Weiss Friedberg, a spokeswoman for Sinai Grace, asserted the hospital's commitment to patient safety, claiming there were "no indication" of concern during Figueroa-Berrios's employment screening process. "We also have processes to identify and address patient safety issues and take appropriate action," said Friedberg. The hospital responded to the allegations by immediately suspending and ultimately terminating Figueroa-Berrios's employment, and they have expressed full cooperation with law enforcement.
Employees at COPE Hegira Health Behavioral Urgent Care in Livonia, where two assaults allegedly occurred, are accused of failing to report the incidents. Michigan law requires healthcare professionals to report suspected criminal abuse immediately. Detroit police have sought warrants against two employees for not fulfilling this duty.
