The Fairfield Police Department detailed a recent altercation where a drunk driver ended up sideswiping a police car. Last Thursday, while Officer Gassen patrolled Pennsylvania Avenue, a vehicle drove straight towards him on the wrong side of the road. The car, later identified as being maneuvered by 26-year-old Adrian Perez-Gomez, struck the patrol vehicle and various roadside fixtures before halting near Fire Station No. 37, according to the Fairfield Police Department.

Following the collision, Perez-Gomez, who sustained this daunting escapade by continuing northbound in the wrong direction after striking Officer Gassen’s patrol car, stopped only after hitting the curb and a one-way sign at Pennsylvania Avenue and Empire Street. The Fairfield Police didn’t hesitate to apprehend and book Perez-Gomez for a series of infractions that included driving under the influence and failing to stop after causing damage to property. Officer Gassen thankfully emerged unscathed from what could have easily escalated into a lethal encounter.

In their online statement, Fairfield Police quipped, "Long story short: We’ve found that those driving under the influence aren’t always alert enough to avoid a checkpoint or, as it turns out, to drive on the right side of the road."
