A Friday morning shooting in Ferguson left a man dead and a young child in his car unharmed, after the vehicle crashed near a stretch of roadway that has become shorthand for the city’s long fight over policing and public safety.
Police said officers were called around 10:15 a.m. to the area of West Florissant Avenue and Canfield Drive. When they arrived, they found a car that had crashed at Ellison Drive and Canfield Drive. The driver had been shot, was rushed to a nearby hospital, and was later pronounced dead. A child who had also been in the vehicle was found unharmed. The victim was identified as Edward Johnson Jr., according to First Alert 4.
Past tensions and reforms
Ferguson is still living with the legacy of the 2014 killing of Michael Brown and the U.S. Department of Justice’s 2015 finding of a “pattern or practice” of unconstitutional policing in the city. That federal investigation led to consent decree reforms and years of community debate over how to rebuild trust and keep people safe. The Canfield Drive area and West Florissant Avenue, where Friday’s incident unfolded, remain symbolic flashpoints, as documented by The Washington Post.
Investigators said they used video evidence and witness statements to track individuals who might have been involved to a nearby apartment complex. Officers then “took several people of interest into custody” there. Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle called the shooting “a senseless act of violence” that “has taken a life and forever changed a family,” and he praised officers for their quick response. The department’s account and Doyle’s comments were reported by First Alert 4.
Gunfire has been a recurring problem in Ferguson this month. An earlier Jan. 12 incident saw officers detain multiple people after shots were fired but no injuries were reported, a pattern that has residents and local leaders calling for sustained attention to both enforcement and community support along West Florissant and nearby blocks.
The investigation into Johnson’s killing remains active. Detectives say they are following up on witness leads and reviewing video evidence. No formal charges have been announced, and officials have said more information will be released as it becomes available. This story will be updated as authorities provide additional details.
