A Fisk University student and athlete remains in "extremely critical condition" after a shooting on Interstate 65 in Nashville, Tennessee. The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) reported that the 20-year-old student, identified as Andre Bell, suffered a gunshot wound to the head on Sunday night. As of the latest update, Bell was being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, as per information shared by WSMV.
The incident occurred on I-65 North at Exit 82B near the Interstate 40 interchange, around 8 p.m. According to MNPD, preliminary findings suggest the shooting may have stemmed from a road rage incident; however, the investigation is ongoing, and a clear motive has not yet been established. Officers have been searching for a dark sedan, which they believe has sustained windshield damage, evident by the shattered glass found at the scene. A statement obtained by The Tennessean from police detailed the suspect's vehicle and requested the public's help in identifying it.
The shooting led to a temporary closure of the northbound section of the interstate, with traffic being rerouted to I-40 to circumvent the affected portion. The Tennessee Department of Transportation indicated that all northbound lanes at the location were blocked, including the right shoulder, as stated in a report by WKRN.
At the time of a shooting, Bell was accompanied by two friends as they were returning to campus from a gymnastics event. The two friends, who were unharmed, recounted noticing a dark sedan driving alongside them before the shooting began. Their vehicle, a white Nissan Sentra, eventually collided with a red pickup truck as it spun out of control after Bell was struck. This account was shared by The Tennessean.
MNPD continues to ask for assistance from anyone who may have information regarding the dark sedan or the individuals involved or with access to dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident. Those with information are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463, where they may remain anonymous and could qualify for a cash reward. This outreach was detailed in a press release mentioned by both WSMV and WKRN.
