Flower Mound is laying the groundwork for a roughly $50 million performing arts center inside the River Walk, zeroing in on a 3.67-acre town-owned parcel that officials say could become the community’s next cultural hotspot. Town leaders have circled spring 2029 as a tentative opening and have already kicked off pre-design work and public workshops to figure out what will go inside and how much green space will surround it. The venue is expected to bring steady foot traffic to River Walk restaurants and shops while finally giving the mixed-use district an anchor it has been missing.
Where It Will Go And What It Might Include
According to the Town of Flower Mound, the performing arts center is planned for the 3.67-acre site at 4200 River Walk Drive and could feature a main stage theater, flexible black-box spaces, classrooms, galleries and outdoor performance lawns. The town’s project page notes the facility is intended to plug directly into the River Walk trail system and nearby restaurants so that an underused parcel turns into an everyday destination instead of a dead zone between buildings. Town documents state the parcel was purchased in September 2024 after a feasibility study recommended shifting the project into a mixed-use setting.
Price Tag And Public Dollars
Town officials estimate the arts center will cost roughly $50 million and plan to use proceeds from Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 1 to help cover the bill, according to reporting by Community Impact. The town extended the TIRZ for five years last December and approved an amended participation agreement so Denton County will share in the financing. “We anticipate the performing arts center benefiting communities across our county and region,” Denton County Judge Andy Eads told Community Impact.
Design Team And What Is Being Planned
The town has hired Hoefer Welker in partnership with BORA Architects to lead pre-design services and approved a contract to start refining the program, according to Town of Flower Mound materials. During this pre-design phase, the team will update market and business assessments, define audience capacity and circulation patterns, and lock in the scope before schematic design and cost estimating begin. Officials say those pre-design deliverables will form the basis for a guaranteed maximum price and an eventual construction timeline.
Public Input, Schedule And Next Steps
Local reporting by the Cross Timbers Gazette notes that town staff held a public feedback session on Dec. 11 and expect the pre-design stage to last roughly 15 weeks before schematic design kicks off. The town has penciled in a tentative opening in spring 2029, although planners emphasize that final costs and schedules will not be locked in until design advances. Residents can look for a steady run of community workshops, stakeholder meetings and Town Council agenda items as the project moves through its next phases.
Why The River Walk Matters
Town Manager James Childers has described the arts center as a catalyst for consistent visitors at the River Walk, saying the general idea is to be able to put something that has people on a regular basis, according to Community Impact. The outlet reports the parcel was originally imagined as an amphitheater next to restaurants, and neighbors at the recent feedback session urged planners to keep plenty of green space and create an inviting public realm that ties the center more tightly into the River Walk. Town officials say they are also exploring complementary programming on nearby undeveloped land, including outdoor movie screens and small performance stages.
Design work, approvals and permitting will ultimately determine the project’s final price tag and schedule, but staff say the upcoming months of pre-design and community engagement will define the character of a center meant to serve both local groups and regional presenters. If the current schedule holds, residents should start seeing more detailed program concepts and early design visuals once the architects move into schematic design later this year.
