A former paraprofessional at Cherokee Elementary School in Clinton Township has been charged with child abuse after allegations surfaced regarding the assault of students with special needs. According to CBS News Detroit, Annika Markesha Vinson, 28, is facing two counts of fourth-degree misdemeanor child abuse stemming from an incident on Oct. 8, 2025, when she reportedly twisted one child's arm and pinned them to the ground with her knee and struck another child's arm.

Following the allegations, Vinson was terminated from her position with Chippewa Valley Schools after police and Child Protective Services were notified. The Detroit News reported that no significant injuries occurred to either student involved in the incident. The charges against Vinson hold punishments that could lead to up to a year in jail.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido highlighted the gravity of the situation due to the vulnerable nature of the students involved. "The allegations in this case are serious and deeply concerning, particularly because they involve a position of trust with vulnerable children," Lucido said in a statement obtained by The Detroit News. "The safety of the residents of Macomb County remains my highest priority."

Vinson, who does not have an attorney listed in court records, was arraigned on Jan. 2 and released on a $5,000 personal bond, which, according to The Detroit News, means she did not have to pay unless she fails to appear in court. Being scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Jan. 12, as mentioned by mlive, Vinson's court proceedings will continue to determine the outcome of the case.
