Fort Worth's Homeless Outreach Team (HOPE) faced a challenging rescue operation this past Sunday. The Fort Worth Fire Department reported that the team returned to an encampment they had visited the previous day to check on individuals who had opted to remain outside in the cold. Situated off East 9th Street, the camp was positioned beneath a bridge and at the bottom of a steep embankment, complicating the team's efforts to assist those present.
The HOPE team, dedicated to "Home. Outreach. Prevention. Education.", navigated tough terrain to help encampment occupants reach a warming shelter. Four individuals, lacking shoes after theirs were soaked and frozen, were physically carried up the hill for their safety. However, one man, emotionally distressed and having suffered through the night's extreme cold, began seizing halfway up the embankment due to hypothermia. "He reassured him that he was safe and that help was coming," the Fort Worth Fire Department said, detailing the rescue worker's efforts to comfort him.
With actions shifting to emergency mode, the HOPE team managed to stabilize the seizing man inside the transport bus before flagging down an ambulance for support. The collective action of the FWFD Engine 1 crew and the ambulance team saw him transported to a local hospital for advanced medical care. Following this incident, the outreach team resumed its mission, assisting the rest of the encampment's individuals to the safety of the shelter.
