Gainesville High School’s head football coach, Josh Niblett, is leaving the high school level to pursue opportunities in college football. During his four-year tenure with the Red Elephants, Niblett compiled a 45-9 record and guided the team to the state finals twice.
During Niblett’s time at Gainesville, the team won two region championships. His final season included a legal dispute with the Georgia High School Association over an on-field incident, in which Gainesville was largely successful in court. Niblett stated that his players were “acting out of loyalty to their teammates rather than aggression,” according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Gainesville High School’s athletic director, Adam Lindsey, expressed appreciation for Niblett’s contributions. As per FOX 5 Atlanta, Lindsey said Niblett established a “championship mindset and strong foundation” at the school. Prior to Gainesville, Niblett had a 236-58 record across several Alabama programs and won seven state championships.
Speculation has emerged about Niblett’s next role. AccessWDUN Sports reported that he may join the University of Colorado’s coaching staff, a possibility fueled by a March 2025 meeting documented on X/Twitter. Niblett was seen with University of Colorado head coach and former Atlanta Falcons defensive back Deion Sanders, leading to conjecture that they could work together. Sanders shared photos of the pair at Colorado’s facility during a Nike Elite Clinic, as reported by Atlanta News First. Meanwhile, Gainesville officials have said they will begin the search for a new coach to succeed Niblett.
