An investigation is underway by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation after a shooting involving two Union City police officers left a 24-year-old Atlanta man injured. Fox 5 Atlanta reports that the incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, January 4, near 7:35 p.m., at an apartment in the 5700 block of Buffington Road.

The officers were responding to a report of gunfire when they encountered Cameron Willis at the residence. According to police, Willis was armed with a gun when he appeared at the door. The police instructed him to drop the weapon, but Willis instead hid it behind the door. As reported by Fox 5 Atlanta, when Willis emerged from behind the door, the officers fired their weapons, striking him.

Willis received medical attention at a local hospital. Meanwhile, the officers involved, who were unharmed, were also taken to a separate hospital for evaluation due to symptoms described by 11Alive as stress-related, including elevated heart rates and shortness of breath.

The GBI's involvement in the case follows standard procedures for police-involved shootings, and their findings will ultimately be handed over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for further review. The officers' names have not been released pending the ongoing investigation. This situation marks yet another instance in a string of officer-involved shootings that continue to incite public concern and calls for transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
