At the recent Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Mid-Winter conference, Governor Greg Abbott took the stage to honor military service members with a nod toward the state's deep-rooted support for its veterans. "We wouldn't be America today without those willing to fight and defend our freedom and our country across the entire globe," Abbott said, according to a state press release. The Governor stressed the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices and achievements of those who have served.
Abbott was accompanied by several VFW officials, including State Commander Dave Walden and State Chaplain Jim Russell. In his speech, he expressed gratitude to the men and women who don the uniform and serve abroad, underscoring that, in part because of their service, Texas boasts a substantial population of over 1.7 million veterans and active military members. He adamantly claimed the state's backing for its veterans, vowing to always eagerly support Texas veterans during his tenure.
In addition to his verbal commendations, Governor Abbott made note of legislative victories for veterans, highlighting the signing of House Joint Resolution 133 that permanently eliminates the franchise tax for veteran-owned businesses. This move helps to ensure that veterans transitioning back into civilian life have the opportunity to thrive in the business community without the added burden of this particular tax.
The Governor's remarks also touched upon an ongoing initiative perhaps not widely known outside of military and veteran circles: the allocation of $50 million toward clinical trials for ibogaine, a drug showing potential to significantly enhance the lives of veterans, especially those battling with service-related health issues. This investment signals a commitment to not only honor Texas veterans historically but to actively improve their future. The trials aim to assess ibogaine as a viable treatment option for conditions that disproportionately affect the veteran community.
The Texas VFW Mid-Winter conference serves as a reminder of the significant contributions veterans have made, and continue to make, to not only the state of Texas but the nation as a whole. Governor Abbott's appearance and address highlighted ongoing efforts within the state to provide support and respect for the servicemen and servicewomen who have worn the uniform on behalf of their country.
