Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made an announcement, according to a post on the official state website, that the Lone Star state is injecting $15.2 million into the semiconductor industry. This hefty sum, sourced from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF), is earmarked for Tekscend Photomask Round Rock Inc. to boost photomask production at their facility in Round Rock, Texas. This move is expected to create 50 new jobs and comes as part of a larger investment strategy totaling more than $223 million.

"This $223 million investment by Tekscend Photomask to expand production capacity at their photomask facility in Round Rock will further strengthen a critical supply chain for semiconductor manufacturing in Texas," Governor Abbott noted, with a keen vision for Texas's role in the resurgence of American semiconductor manufacturing. Hovering over the 12nm tech node, used in a plethora of modern devices, Tekscend Photomask's expansion plans include a 40% increase in their Round Rock site's capacity, along with upgraded equipment and facilities for heightened production efficiency, as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor.

The local economy and job market stand to gain significantly from this maneuver. "Since 1987, Tekscend Photomask has been proud to call Round Rock home, supporting the Texas and U.S. semiconductor industry with world-class photomask manufacturing," Tekscend Photomask Round Rock President John Nykaza said in a statement to the Texas government's news post. With the TSIF support, the company plans to boost its technical capabilities significantly and ramp up its production capacity, attempting to stay ahead of growing demands for research and development in photomask technologies.

Reflecting on the importance of this project for the state, Representative John Bucy III said, "The Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund grant awarded to Tekscend Photomask Round Rock Inc. represents a powerful investment in our state’s future while creating 50 high-skilled jobs right here in Round Rock." The Texas CHIPS Act, signed into law by Governor Abbott back in 2023, established the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund and the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Consortium. Administered by the Texas CHIPS Office, a division within the Texas Economic Development & Tourism Office in the Office of the Governor, these programs are aimed at leveraging Texas's position as a frontrunner in semiconductor manufacturing and encouraging further expansion of related businesses within the state's borders.
