Announced by Governor Greg Abbott, seasoned legal professional John E. Burt is set to take on the role of Jasper County Criminal District Attorney, a position he will occupy until the end of 2026. Bringing a wealth of experience from both educational and legal fields, Burt's appointment marks a significant step in his career trajectory.
According to a news release from the Governor's website, before securing this appointment, Burt served Jasper County as the 1st Assistant Criminal District Attorney. While his career has predominantly orbited legal affairs, Burt also garnered experience relevant to the district attorney post, having been an assistant superintendent and superintendent for the Buna Independent School District. Burt's range of expertise positions him as both a legal and educational steward, potentially offering a multifaceted perspective to the Jasper jurisdiction.
More than just a legal expert, Burt has roots in the educational community, which started with his educational background, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and a Master of Education in Administration from Lamar University. Later, he earned his Juris Doctor from the South Texas College of Law. His dual focus on education and law is echoed throughout his career, from his terms on the Buna ISD School Board—where he once served as president—to his time in private legal practice and as an assistant criminal district attorney in Newton County, the Office of the Texas Governor noted.
