The winter storm that has gripped Texas over the weekend continues to exact its toll, with Bexar County the latest addition to Governor Greg Abbott's disaster declaration list. As reported by Fox San Antonio, Bexar County joins an additional 84 Texas counties declared disaster zones, making for a total of 219 statewide. "Communities across the state have been impacted by this weekend's winter weather," Governor Abbott stated. The declaration is part of a response to swiftly bring resources to bear, as authorities prioritize road safety and ensure that the power grid can meet the demands of residents struggling to stay warm.
Initially, only 134 counties were included in the governor's Thursday declaration, but the need to quickly expand emergency support became apparent following worsening conditions. According to a news release covered by KSAT, Governor Abbott's updated order hopes to "help more Texans during these freezing temperatures." The state has moved to deploy a significant number of responders and equipment, totaling more than 10,900 personnel and over 4,900 vehicles, to assist those affected by the icy grip of winter.
With the addition of Bexar County, residents there now have access to state resources and over 375 warming centers available across Texas, set up to provide some respite from the freezing temperatures. Governor Abbott has advised Texans to stay indoors and off the roads whenever possible, while local officials manage warming centers to help individuals and families combat the cold.
In support of the local responses, numerous state agencies remain actively engaged in efforts to provide relief and maintain essential services. Among them, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, the Railroad Commission, and the Texas National Guard are part of a robust response framework tackling the challenges wrought by the winter storm. The disaster declaration significantly augments this framework, allowing these agencies to rapidly secure and distribute aid more effectively across the affected regions. "I am updating my disaster declaration to include additional counties to help more Texans during these freezing temperatures," Governor Abbott urged, highlighting the necessity of a cohesive response amidst these challenging conditions, according to Fox San Antonio.
