Nevada County received a $5.3 million grant to convert the Stagecoach Motel in Grass Valley into 16 permanent supportive housing units, with the majority reserved for veterans experiencing homelessness. Construction could begin in April 2026, with an on-site manager and partnership with AMI Housing to oversee daily operations, according to the Nevada County.
Supervisor Lisa Swarthout emphasized, "It’s important that neighbors feel informed, understand the benefits for the neighborhood and local businesses, and know they have a contact if they have questions or concerns." David West, the county’s veterans services officer, added, "This is a major step towards ending veteran homelessness in Nevada County. You can't solve homelessness overnight, but housing stock is always the biggest obstacle," as reported by the Nevada County.
The Stagecoach Motel is being renovated to provide residents with services including case management, mental health and housing support, life skills training, and peer support. Funding comes from the California Department of Housing and Community Development, the Homekey+ program, and Proposition 1 to help reach "functional zero" in veteran homelessness. County staff have started contacting nearby residents to provide information about the project, as stated by the Nevada County.
