After an intense encounter that could have had a tragic outcome, Harris County Sheriff's Office K-9 officer Ghost is ready to return to his duties, following a harrowing experience that saw him nearly drowned by a suspect. The incident took place last Monday, January 5, when deputies responded to a sighting of 21-year-old Bryan Crofton, a man with active felony warrants, as reported by KHOU.
Upon being spotted, Crofton led authorities on a chase that ended when he crashed his car into a ditch. Fleeing on foot, he ran toward nearby water, where the pursuit took a dangerous turn. K-9 Ghost and his handler, Deputy Almeida, engaged Crofton in the water. "Ghost bit the man as he allegedly tried to drown the dog to escape," Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez detailed.
The quick actions of the deputies at the scene were instrumental in saving K-9 Ghost. After being found unconscious in chest-deep water, the K-9 officer regained consciousness and was promptly treated at the scene before being transported to a veterinary clinic. Crofton, already wanted for warrants including injury to a child and interfering with 911 services, received additional charges after the confrontation. He now also faces charges for evading arrest and interfering with a service animal. He was taken to a hospital for the treatment of his bites from K-9 Ghost. Meanwhile, the resilient canine has fully recovered and, just a week after the ordeal, is "eager to get back to work," as per the sheriff's department announcement.
