Residents across the Hawaiian Islands should prepare for strong winds and changing weather as a cold front moves through today. "Southerly winds with this system will produce stronger wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph range over mountain ridgelines and along north and east sections of most islands today," with "A few thunderstorms are possible mainly along the frontal band," while the front moves quickly from Kauai to the Big Island, according to the National Weather Service.
After the front passes, drier, cooler, and more stable conditions are expected with northerly and then easterly trade winds through the weekend. However, "another cold front will likely move down the island chain, producing another round of wet rainy weather, from next week Wednesday through Thursday," as stated by the National Weather Service.
A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for most coastal waters due to gusty winds. “An extra large northwest swell will elevate seas above SCA thresholds once again just as wind speeds decrease,” the National Weather Service in Honolulu reported. North and west facing shores have a High Surf Advisory until this evening, with conditions expected to increase tonight from an incoming swell. South to southeast winds will strengthen across the islands this morning, causing possible mountain obscuration and updates to aviation statements.
