As we enter another tax season, Hillsborough UF/IFAS Extension Service is offering an olive branch to taxpayers in the form of a free tax preparation webinar series. These virtual events are tailored to update residents on federal income tax changes, introduce free tax prep resources, and teach them how to use their tax returns as a financial planning tool. The first in the series begins at noon next Wednesday, addressing recent federal legislation and its effects on individual tax filers.
Those interested can register to join the "Federal Income Tax Updates" webinar, which will meticulously navigate through the labyrinth of new deductions, alterations in tax credits, and revisited aspects of 529 accounts, the webinar which takes place virtually aims to demystify the often-complex world of taxes. Following this, a webinar on the 3rd of February will provide a rundown on available no-cost tax preparation resources and the documentation needed for filing your taxes, along with common questions answered for participants.
But the offerings from the Hillsborough Extension don't stop at just preparation; emphasized is the significance of understanding your tax return as more than a one-time affair. Articulated in the final session on February 18th, residents will learn how a tax return can offer insights for savvy financial decisions throughout the year, the service focusing on nuanced elements like adjusted gross income and tax rates while elucidating why a refund doesn't equate to paying less in taxes overall, as some might mistakenly believe.
Tax Day might not be everyone's favorite day but being prepared can take some of that sting out of it, the webinar series promises to equip Hillsborough's taxpayers for the inevitable – and maybe even help them find some financial clarity along the way.
